For some living in the snow barren Southeast of England, well your waking up to some snow this morning. I’ve seen snow pics from around the Luton area and there’s a chance at seeing more through the weekend.
I pointed out in yesterday’s video that when you’ve snow on the ground and winds slacken/skies are clear, it doesn’t take much for the air to cool. It hit -11C last night at Tulloch Bridge and based on the pattern vs widespread snow cover through the next 5-7 days, I think most nights will see -9 to -12C.
Snow has become fairly widespread now with the current cold spell and totals are adding up too.

Here’s Europe…

Winds are circling a southbound low at the moment and with slightly milder Atlantic air mixing we’re seeing rain for some but into the weekend and winds become a straight northerly and so showers should be mainly snow along with lot’s of sunshine although that won’t help temps. Saturday looks particularly snowy across Highland Scotland with additional inches falling on top of what’s already there. Further wintry showers are likely for other parts of Ireland and the UK also.
The models show high pressure settling in with lighter winds to start next week and that means the potential for the coldest nights of winter. The benchmark of -14C may be broken with particular attention drawn to Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday nights. Elsewhere, IF skies are clear and winds light over snow cover, you may easily hit -6 to -10 say from central England northward including inland parts of Northern Ireland.
The ECMWF doesn’t go wild with the nighttime lows next week but this setup is favourable for some rather cold nights. The model shows at least somewhere hitting -9 or lower each night between Mon and Thu.
The ECMWF shows this cold pattern lasting through at least next Friday.

ummm…. Did think it was something like that. For the south its estimating as well as a tesco’s Managing Director….. 😉
Are you sure the ECMWF is working it keeps showing most of the south with (if only a little) snow cover… i live in Hampshire and travel up and down alot of it and so far i havent seen any white at all.. and a lot of forcasts ive seen so far are saying thats not going to change… Its like a lovley spring day, today… 🙂
Initial snow cover charts aren’t taken from satellite images of actual snow cover and so it’s what the model ‘thinks’ is on the ground. An estimate if you will.
It’s overdone in the South but overall is got the right idea.
