One could argue that the origins of the current US arctic outbreak can be linked back to last month’s explosive NH snow cover expansion and consequential stratospheric warming over top.
The warming continues to put pressure on the polar vortex. Notice in the below chart the strong warming over Eurasia which actually shifts the vortex nearly all the way to Scandinavia by 384 hours. There’s a lot going on in the upper reaches of our atmosphere which suggests we have a lot to contend with this winter not just over the US but hemisphere. This could be a real sign of bigger things coming once we enter winter proper. hint: full-scale sudden stratospheric warming with completely collapse of the vortex down into the tropopause.

Behind the arctic front, temps have crashed as much as 40-60 degrees inside 24 hours.
