The 2nd of 3 lobes of chill drop into southern Quebec and the Northeast tonight dropping temperatures back into the 30s widely across New England by tomorrow morning with frost.
We had the first cold start and the coldest start for many since late May back on Friday morning then there’s a near repeat tonight and interestingly we have somewhat of a wild temperature ride through the upcoming 5 days with the return of mid summer level heat by mid week followed by another, potentially stronger shot of cold.
Here’s the ECMWF upper chart and 850s temps tomorrow.

Here are projected temps according to the GFS tomorrow morning in the Northeast.

By mid next week it’s all about the surge of heat crossing the Midwest with mid-90s for Chicago, possibly Detroit and Pittsburgh, 90-93 from DC all the way to Boston possibly.

Wednesday looks to be the hottest day from KC to Detroit but Thursday could be hottest for the I-95 corridor. Overnight lows will be stuck in the mid-70s from DC to NYC possibly around 80 in KC and St Louis.
By Friday the trough is acalling with MUCH COOLER air to replace the heat and last gasp of summer.

By Friday temperatures in Minneapolis, Chicago and Detroit may go from the mid-90s Wednesday to 50s or low 60s Friday. It may be a struggle to reach the low to mid 50s Saturday with overnight lows dipping into the 40s with suburban 30s!

As for the Northeast, we go from the low 90s to possibly frost and freeze conditions. The ECMWF drops a deeper trough with lower heights across the region by Saturday morning.

Incidentally the ECMWF has lower heights than the GFS is suggesting and so it may be colder than the above chart suggests. Wouldn’t be surprised if we see pockets of 20s across New England down into Pennsylvania, western Maryland and West Virginia with the first 40s in the Big Cities except Baltimore and DC.
