Scotland
The pattern has finally switched around with our weather now coming in from a SW direction, rather than from the east and that means much cloudier skies along with rain and a freshening breeze. With the cold air mass still trying to hang on, it’s a cold rain with snow falling over the hills.
Through the rest of tonight and into your Friday, expect more ‘pulses’ of rain to push up from the Irish Sea into Dumfries and Galloway and these will spread north and east across the country in a fairly patchy fashion. Some of these pulses will be heavy, bringing some coverings of snow to the hills, perhaps sleet to lower levels, especially tonight.
Lows tonight hold at 1-3C, feeling cooler in the breeze. Highs tomorrow remain on the cool side of average at 5-7C. Little if any sunshine over the next couple of days.

England
With Atlantic low pressure back in play once again, it’s all about the wind, April showers, cloud but also milder temps and today it’s looking and perhaps feeling more like April rather than January. Heavy, thundery showers have been peppering the landscape today and these will continue through tonight, in fact there are several pulses of fast moving, thundery showers which will push across the South overnight tonight.
In the North though it’s still cold at just 5-6C with sleet falling at lower levels across parts of Cumbria, Northumberland down into Durham and Yorkshire, with a fresh covering of snow over the N York Moors and N Pennines.
Further south it’s sunshine and April showers, 8-9C beneath those showers but where sun shines, it’s nearer 12 or 13C, perhaps an odd 14C.
Lows tonight range from a cool 1-3C in the North, a much milder 6-8C in the South. Friday will be a repeat of today!
Wales
The pattern has done a 160 degree flip with a milder but more unsettled SW flow, however it’s no quick fix in terms of the return to mild. Because the air had become so cold, the Atlantic air mass it’s having to work on the cold air and so highs today got up to just 7-10C with snow falling over the hills. It’s a slow process at removing the chillier air but it’s happening nonetheless and will become more noticable towards the weekend.
Tonight and through Friday, pulses of heavy, April-like showers will push into Pembrokeshire and will spread right across the country in scattered fashion. Don’t be surprised to hear some thunder with hail mixing with rain in places. Watch out for gusty SSE winds, especially along the South coast.
Lows of 3-7C, highs tomorrow still a little cool at 8-11C but warmer by this weekend.
Northern Ireland
Snow and cold is now being replaced by April showers and with time, those temps are going to rise. Tonight, more heavy, thundery showers will impact south and eastern parts, staying somewhat drier across more northern areas. Wind, cloud and showers will hold temps above freezing tonight but where the heaviest showers fall, don’t be surprised to see sleet mixing with rain. Lows down to 2-4C.
Friday should be a slightly quieter day with more brightness on offer but there’s always the threat of some heavy, thundery showers popping up, especially during the afternoon when we see some surface warming. Highs better than of late at 8-11C, locally 12, maybe 13C in the sunnier, sheltered spots.
Becoming even more unsettled this weekend but warmer!
Ireland
A fairly brisk SW flow over Ireland on the backside of a frontal system is driving heavy, April-like showers north across the country. These may pack a punch locally with hail, torrential downpours and thunder and should continue into tonight but they should fade in many areas after dark. Lows tonight down no lower than 4-5C.
Through Friday, it’s much the same as today with hefty April showers on offer, turning somewhat milder with highs of 8-10C, perhaps 12C in the sunshine.
Becomes warmer but stays very unsettled this weekend.
