GFS Shows Cold Taking Over Day 8-16 Across US (Includes Video!)

The pattern is a cold and stormy one with a brief pullback in temperature across the East, however, this will be hard to notice given the snowfall coming mid week to the Mid-Atlantic and then the bigger event which arrives this weekend.

At the close of my earlier post which looks at the next two snowstorms stretching from the Texas Panhandle to the Mid-Atlantic and southern New England (second being more of a player in southern New England than first), a major trough, the strongest of the entire winter, is seen to dive into the east in the wake of the second storm as it departs the coast.

A reminder of just how strong that trough is expected to be off the ECMWF.

Now that one what you call a trough right! Don’t quite remember the last time I saw the 540 line all the way to the GA-FL line, the 528 line goes deep into South Carolina, 522 line south of the VA-NC line and 516 down to DC. If this were to happen, I recon we could see close to zero degrees down as far south as Richmond. Remember that this drops south in the wake of a potential 12″ snowstorm for the Mid-Atlantic, that allows the entire vortex to ride snowcover all the way past Wash, DC.

The purpose of this evening’s post was to show you what the GFS was showing for the next 16 days.

The West is pretty cold and growing colder with the deepening of the trough as the two systems drop from British Columbia into the Southern Plains, they will take arctic air with them.

The current system developing tonight into tomorrow over the Southern Plains is allowing big, thundery rains over the South, we of course have seen sporadic severe weather breaking out, some of which has brought very damaging weather to parts of Mississippi. As much as nearly 9 inches of rain has fallen in the Dothan, AL area in just 72 hours. Tuesday will see more heavy rains and sporadic severe weather, another batch arrives late week as the next system deepens the trough further west over the SP.

Interestingly, once you get beyond 4 days, any warmth (if you can call it that), gets lost in the East with snowstorm one arriving Wed into Thurs and the second, bigger storm which hits this weekend.

By the time we get out to day 7, any warmth is lost with two big snow events in the East, note the swath of blue? This is the model depicting the fresh snowcover. Also note the warmth up over New England. I think that is somewhat overdone as there’s still plenty of snow left behind from the blizzard. These next two systems wipe out any mild air which tries to work into the Northeast. These two snows make way for a major shot of cold to start next week.

Finally, take a look at this AFTER the second system passes and exits the Mid-Atlantic coast, probably by Sunday!

This of course is the 8 days which follow. Look cold right?

See the post from earlier which looks at the midweek and weekend snowstorms. Wild times!
