Due to the amount and intensity of the snow across central and eastern Scotland right down through much of England tonight I thought I would throw up another quick post.
It’s after dark that I am most concerned about as the front pushes into western England and bumps into the still very cold air through all levels of the atmosphere. Scotland has seen snow through much of the day with poor travel conditions up and down the M74 as well as through southern Highland routes. Even the Central Lowlands has seen a coasting to as much as 2 inches with more up over surrounding hills.
As we progress through tonight, there is a good chance that most areas, even at LOW LEVELS may see 1-2 inches across Northern England extending down through the Midlands some spots picking up as much as 5 inches. The higher roads routes through the southern Highlands, Southern Uplands, Cumbrian Fells, Pennines, Cotswalds, Chilterns and Downs could see as much as 4-8 inches locally. Most major towns and cities away from far western England are at risk.
To make matters worse, a strong south wind will make for very poor visibility with blowing and drifting over particularly higher routes. A blizzard is even possible tonight over the Pennines.
This is certainly not a night to be venturing out unless you need to be. Stay safe and please check ahead.
The GFS continues to show big snow totals over the west Highlands and over the Pennines. As much as a foot of snow may fall in the North Pennines, just east of Lancaster and the M6 while upwards of 14-20 inches is shown to fall in the hills north of Loch Lomond within 48 hours.
