The fierce cold which has dominated Asia all December has shifted with a split away from Kazakhstan and the heart of Russia. While a piece of the ‘coldest air on earth’ went west bringing the coldest air of the season to Moscow just before major warming is set to take place, the other piece headed east across Mongolia and into China.

According to the South China Morning Post, a remote county in Xinjiang apparently recorded a temperature of -56F or -49C. Many parts of Northern China have endured frequent nights down to -22F or -30C.
The capital, Beijing is reportedly enduring the worst cold spell in 30 years and back on Sunday, a bitter ‘high’ of 16F or -8.8C was considered the coldest December high in 57 years.
