The next major storm system is now pushing into the West Coast and already it is bringing some astonishing snowfall to California’s Cascades. I saw in the latest winter storm video off TWC that at Mt Shasta, they have recorded 10 FEET of snow in just 12 HOURS, that is quite astonishing with a snowfall rate of 10″ per hour. wow! Other areas including the Sierra will record 2-3, perhaps locally 5 feet from this system before it’s moisture tracks east towards the hgeart of the Intermountain West and eventually the Plains.
This storm won’t end with just these incredible reports because it will swing across the central Rockies and dump anywhere from a few inches of snow across Metro Denver to 12-18″, locally 24+ inches over the mountains during Monday into Tuesday. By Christmas Day it should once again bring the wow factor as it produces a white Christmas over Oklahoma, a region which has just a 10% likilihood of a white Christmas.

By later into Christmas evening, the system may bring a late white Christmas to parts of Arkansas, again, this is rare for here. How much snow may fall? I expect 3-6 inches in OKC but over northern sections of the Sooner state we could see over a foot, perhaps 2-4, locally 6-10″ over parts of NW Arkansas. By Boxing Day the snow should push into Missouri and across the northern Ohio Valley and by the 27th should bring a large snowstorm with big impact across the Interior Northeast with perhaps 1-2 feet of snow over the mountains of West Virginia/Virginia, 8-14″ over parts of Pennsylvania, New York and New England.
Here’s the GFS snowdepth chart for the 27th. It keeps the snow west of the Big Cities and I think that may be open to debate. The track of the storm may go slightly further east and therefore just a few degrees in temperature difference as well as availability of moisture will mean a fine line between snow or no snow for the cities.

While another system comes right on the heels of this major snow producer, there will be plenty of arctic air feeding in, especially on the backside of this low and with a solid and deep snowpack all the way to Oklahoma, don’t be surprised to see 0F over Oklahoma right after this system pushes through.
Here’s the pressure/precip chart off the GFS by Boxing Day, note the 1027mb high sitting over the Central Plains, that’s a frigid morning right there folks, may get below zero even in OKC, perhaps even into North Texas with this shot.

Will have more on this system and the impending arctic cold later Christmas Eve. Stay tuned!
