While we await the departure of the latest frontal boundary, our next trouble maker can already be seen brewing to the southwest down near the Azores. This will come up and impact southern England on Sunday. With pressure dropping to near 990 mb and a tight circulation, wind as well as rain is likely to be a feature. Amazingly but not surprising, the newest run of the GFS shows a 5th system which appears to impact Monday, a mere 24 hours after system No. 4 strikes and this would strike the same location.

While we are set to see at least one if not two more wind and rain events, the high currently over Russia and is sprawlled out over most of Europe, is seen to build west, OVERTOP of the trough and area of lower heights dominating the UK. This building of heights extending across northern Scandinavia looks to join forces with an equally as strong ridge which is heading due north from the central Atlantic up to Greenland. Each low which northeast from the Azores to southern Scandinavia is acting like wheels which reach up into the colder regions of the high latitides and pulls it south and down over the UK. This process of heights building over top of lowering heights is the great shift, all cold weather lovers have been longing for.

The transition won’t be smooth nor will the col come all of a sudden. The clash between Atlantic and arctic begins and this should commence the snow laying process. It’s after all this is complete and it may take 10 days, the arctic hound will come acalling. Once we get a decent snow cover, then I expect an arctic high to build over top and I believe week 2 of December may be a good candidate for this to happen. When it does, make sure your heating is in good working order!
