Blocking Pattern Looking Good for February!

These are two of the latest charts off Dr Ryan Maue’s site.. policlimate.com which clearly show the downward trend since Christmas of both the Arctic Oscillation and North Atlantic Oscillation. Two key indicators for not only cold across the mid-latitudes but for cold pool development and persistence over eastern North America and Western Europe. Both show a negative phase from around Jan 26. onwards and this along with models show the re-release of Arctic air following the next 7-10 day cold period followed by brief warming. Blocking over Greenland is looking more likely into February and may mean the coldest month for most.
