The combination of sub-freezing air, bitter easterly winds blowing from Siberia and a deep low named Storm Emma which started off with a battering of Portugal lifted it’s wind and moisture north. The stage was set for one of the biggest snow/blizzard events in recent Irish history. Big impacts were also felt in South Wales and SW England.
Heavy snow driven by gale-force winds led to scenes not witnessed since the 60s from Dublin to Cork. Co Kildare was one of the worst affected areas where the combination of 40-50cm snow and winds building drifts to as high as 10ft, meant people and house were buried.
Met Eireann put most of Ireland under a rare RED SNOW WARNING.
