Late September heat wave melts records in East while it’s winter Out West

We’ve an impressive late September heatwave with many major cities including Chicago recording their longest string of 90s so late in the season as well as the latest ‘hottest day of the year’. The heat is one thing but the level of chill coupled with heavy snowfall is major the spread of winter vs summer all the more extreme.

Traverse City, Michigan, reached 95 degrees on consecutive days Friday, Saturday and Sunday, topping the previous record latest-in-season 95-degree-plus high in the northern Michigan city by one full week (Sep. 15, 1939).

Burlington, Vermont, had its record latest high in the 90s Sunday, topping the previous record by over a week (Sep. 16, 1939).

The previous day, Milwaukee, Wisconsin also recorded their record latest-in-season 95-degree-plus high, also previously set on Sep. 15, 1939.

Other daily records Sunday were set in Augusta, Maine (87), Concord, New Hampshire (91), New York City (91), Pittsburgh (90), and Springfield, Illinois (94). Several Midwest and Northeast locations Sunday were hotter than the Desert Southwest.

Highs in the 80s and 90s, threatening more daily record highs, are possible from the Great Lakes to the Northeast the next few days.

By Monday, however, the first sign of cooler conditions will begin to move into the Plains as the pattern shift begins.

...Record Late Season Heat Numbers...

Late September 2017 is seeing near to record warmth across a
sizable portion of the Midwest, including northern Illinois and
northwest Indiana. Following are climatological numbers to put
this ongoing late season heat into perspective.

Records date back to 1871.

2017 has seen the latest 90+ since 2007 (Sept 24).

There has never been a heat wave of this duration and magnitude
this late in the season in Chicago. Chicago has not recorded
5 consecutive days with high temperatures 92F+ this late in the
year. The previous latest streak of 4+ days in a row of 92F+
was Sept 16-19, 1955.

In addition, this is the latest Chicago has ever recorded 3 days
in a row of mid 90s (94F+). The previous record for latest 3+ day
streak of mid 90s was back on Sept 13-15, 1927 and also the same
dates in 1939.

Saturday`s high temperature of 95F tied for the hottest day of
2017. This sets a record for the latest in the year that the
hottest temperature of the year was recorded in Chicago.
Previously, the latest in the year that the annual high
temperature occurred was Sept 14th back in 1893, 1915, and
also 1927.

The daily average temperature on Sept 21 was 83 degrees, which
ties for the warmest daily temperature on record after the
midpoint of Sept (Sept 21, 1931).
