Stormy Atlantic Drives Record Warmth Across Europe To End March 2017

With multiple large lows spinning out in the Atlantic, downstream southerly winds and ridging brought warm, sunny weather to a large swathe of Europe to end March.

March 31 averaged 23.2C across France which set’s a new March record, surpassing 1955.

Strasbourg got close to their March record of 25.7C set in 1989 with a maximum of 25.1C set yesterday.

Germany got within 1C off the national March record yesterday with Kitzingen soaring to 25.6C.

The national March record for Germany is 26.6C set back in 1989.

Denmark averaged 20C yesterday which marks the warmest ‘average temperature’ across the country in March since 1990.

The maximum over Denmark was a summer-like 21.5C.

Even down towards Italy and the Adriatic, temperatures are still typically cool and don’t tend to truly heat up until late April into May. However, the end of March looked and felt more like early June with countless March records melting.

Despite cool, even snowy interludes, March like much of the past winter has turned out warm. Possibly warmest on record for the continent.
