Papers Spouting Nonesense About ‘Warmest Feb Day in 160 Years, UK Turns Stormy Wed-Fri

Written by on February 19, 2017 in Rest of Europe, United Kingdom & Ireland, Winter 2016/17 with 0 Comments

I see the papers are at it again with their extreme hype of shear nonsense. The Sun/Star/Daily Record are saying tomorrow (Monday) will be the UK’s ‘hottest February day in 160 years’. Hum, firstly our official records only date back to 1910 and 18C would NOT be a UK record either.

If my maths serves me correct, 1910 till now isn’t 160 years… Also the UK record set only back in 1998 is 19.7C and again, if I’m not mistaken, 18C isn’t as high as 19.7C.

Here’s the facts Liam Dutton tweeted out yesterday!

So, what can we expect during Monday? Firstly, plenty of westerly wind (esp North) with gusts of 40-50 mph, outbreaks of rain primarily on windward facing slopes (Highland, Cumbrian Fells, Pennines etc) with brightest conditions to the lee (eastern areas) and it’s areas of eastern Scotland, England and Wales which may see 15 or 16C. Only a select few prone spots susceptible to downslope warming could see 17C.

As we progress through the week, Atlantic lows will gang up to our NW shores and Wed through Friday could see 2 or 3 sub-980mb lows packing gale or severe gales across Northern and Western UK. Looks like a lot of rain with increased chance of flooding over the West Highlands.

The Atlantic jet strengthens this week as the temperature imbalance between Greenland and sub-tropics widen with +NAO, enhancing cyclogenesis between Greenland and Scotland.
