Pacific storms slamming the Western US helped drive temperatures to historic levels east of the Rockies with Denver hits 80F for the first time in February while Oklahoma ties it’s February record with an astonishing 99F.
Where it got warm along the Front Range, it turned downright hot on the Plains!

Arctic air across the Northern Tier and summer warmth spreading east across the Southern Tier set the stage for not one but two weather bombs off New England and Nova Scotia within just 4 days.
Large temperature spread within a relatively short distance tends to result in a powerful jet stream and downward energy transfer in which surface winds often exceed 100 mph over ridges.

Telluride, CO saw a gust of 119 mph. An 18 wheeler was blown onto a police cruiser in Wyoming after getting hit by a 90 mph gust!

Top wind gust in Wyoming was 92 mph.

Wind was by far the biggest aspect of this storm from DC to New York while snow was the big factor up in New England and particularly Maine.
The squall line which brought 50-65 mph winds through the DC metro with a 66 mph gust recorded at Reagan National were the strongest since the June 2012 derecho.
