Windstorm Downs Electrical Towers, Scaffolding As Gusts Clock 108 mph in NW Spain, 92 mph SW France

Carried by a super charged 245 mph jet stream, a rapidly deepening depression entered the Bay of Biscay Friday and slammed the central Atlantic Coast of France and Iberia Friday night into Saturday packing severe winds, heavy flooding rain and mountain snow.

One of Spain’s hardest hit areas was Galicia.

The potent zonal jet and surrounding atmospheric environment helped rapidly deepen this depression over the Bay of Biscay with additional energy supported by a rear sting jet.

With centre of low pressure moving onshore along France’s central coast, the strongest winds were focused on SW France/NW Iberia.

Widespread gusts of 70-80 mph along the coast caused significant damage to structures and cut power to some 250,000 in France alone. The strongest recorded wind gust was on Spain’s exposed NW coast at 108 mph where a RED WARNING for wind was issued by AEMET.
