The pattern was on a warm repeat cycle from August through November and now appears to be on a cold one, albeit shorter duration with arctic wave then snowstorm followed by another arctic wave followed by another snowstorm and then the coldest air mass of the 3 sweeps in Sunday!
Before we look at the snow and following cold, this morning was not just the coldest for the Northeast this season but coldest for December in many a year!

Boston dipped to 4F this morning which made for the coldest December reading since 1989.
Mount Washington, NH by far took the cold prize this morning. Air temp of -36F made for the summit’s coldest December reading since 1993 according to Jesse Ferrell but factoring hurricane-force winds of between 75-90 mph, wind chill readings measured the -80s.

The summit turned out to be the planet’s 2nd coldest place this morning.

Washington’s Dulles Airport hit a record 9F, breaking a 1989 record.
