Arctic Air With A Dash Of Siberia Heads South… Chicago’s Late First Snow Is A Record Breaker

The much anticipated Arctic cold has now crossed the barbed wire fence into Montana and shall continue pushing south and east through the remainder of this work week.

Looks like there’s some cross polar flow occurring in this upper air setup.

Firstly, let’s take a look at the source of this southbound cold. Fairbanks, AK recorded a maximum yesterday of -27F. The low yesterday morning in Anchorage, AK was -8F which was the lowest reading there since Christmas Day 2013.

Snowfall is recent days across the Northern Tier will help drive overnight temps down.

Sunday’s Chicago snow a record breaker – City’s largest first measurable snow on record

Through 6pm today’s total snowfall at O’Hare totaled 6.1 inches. The snow was winding down but not totally over so the final snowfall amount could be a bit higher.

This is the city’s largest first measurable (one-day) snowfall total on record dating back to the winter of 1884-85.

New record  December 4, 2016  6.1 inches and counting

4.4 inches        November   3, 1951
4.3 inches      November 24, 2004
4.2 inches   November 20, 2015
