We’re on the verge of closing the books on summer 2016 and it should be of no surprise that many cities from Miami to Bangor will have endured a top 5 hot summer. The dry spring and first half to summer lay the ground work for a hot July and August in the East. The record warm Gulf and Atlantic also played a huge factor by significantly increasing the level of moisture throughout the atmosphere.

The Southeast and Northeast drought gradually worsened through the season and this helped feedback to stronger than normal pressure through the second half of summer.

A strong and dominant high pressure helped sustain a very warm low to mid level atmosphere but clockwise winds circling the high and pulling air off a record warm Gulf and Atlantic brought exceptional humidity levels which helped minimise night time cooling which in turn contributed to such a hot summer overall.

Many cities in the Northeast look poised to see 2016 as the warmest August on record.

An impressive but not surprising number of 90F+ days across the Northeast given the drought.
