Gales This Weekend Followed By Warm and Cold Shots Next Week?

Yesterday’s persistent and at times heavy rain across Wales and England marked the divide between two quite different air masses and during the slowly lengthening overnight hours, that difference was most noticeable.

For a fairly dry South of England and Wales, there was more rain which fell yesterday than in all of July, not difficult given some barely received 1-2mm and we saw between 10-30mm quite widely.

This morning’s infrared satellite view shows the long stretched front extended from southern UK west out across the Atlantic.

Beneath the front it was cool under the cloud and rain, warm in the sun to the north and hot under the sun to the south.

41.4C was achieved in Montoro mainland Spain, 38.2C in San Bartolome de Tirajana Gran Canaria yesterday!

Another hot one for Iberia again today under sunny skies.

As for this morning, it was a summer-like and muggy 17-18C along the Channel Coast to the south of the front while to the north it was more autumnal with a widespread 7-9C away from urban areas. We even seen the first frost in a few weeks across Scotland’s far north with a temperature down to at least -0.5C at Kinbrace.

Despite the cool start across the north, that rain bearing front lifts it’s moisture north and with preceding sunshine, temps may climb to 21C over Central Scotland.

We’ve somewhat of a rollercoaster coming up over the next 10 days.

Our next low moves in proper tomorrow providing blustery conditions for most and likely gale-force winds across the Irish Sea and along exposed coasts.

Then we catch a couple of days break before one of the strongest lows of summer approaches this weekend.

Gusts widely 20-40 mph but 50-70 mph in exposed Northwest on coast and over high ground.

The weekend system clears allowing another lift of warmer air from the south but this is short lived as the next low approaches.

This next system during next week is also interesting but not for it’s wind but what may follow it.

With building heights to the west and the low sliding east of Aberdeen out to sea we pick up a stiff northerly air flow with air originating from the arctic. This could present cool highs accompanied by a chilly, blustery wind.
