The weird and wacky, tough to forecast ups and downs of winter 2015-16 continues with January turning out slightly colder than normal following a record warm December.

Now that we’ve opened February, like December, it’s exceptionally mild in the East but the difference is that there’s plenty of winter all around rather than a sea of warmth. After all the warm open to the month comes hot on the heels of the Blizzard of 2016.

Highs soared into the 50s and 60s throughout the Northeast in recent days melting all that huge snowpack from DC to NYC, however this warmth was followed hot on the warmth’s heels by another significant snow event from DC to Boston. This one caught me off guard I must admit.

Up till now, this has been a poor winter snowfall wise for New England but things may be about to change as a ‘series of potential snow events’ take aim next 6-10 days along with record cold.

Boston, MA so far

Albany, NY, well their still waiting. It’s also the warmest winter to date too.

We have a few chances at Northeast snowfall this upcoming work week and this is followed by a potential major, even record shot of cold.

GFS surface through the next 7 days. Check out the major coastal hugger early this week. Looks like a significant wind and wave maker for the Carolinas. Then there’s the system will dives SE over the Great Lakes, eventually this pops of coastal low near Chesapeake and that may throw Atlantic moisture into the cold draining south over the Northeast to bring snow to the Big Cities. All this is followed by 1, 2, maybe 3 waves of cold.
