The major winter storm looks to be a precursor to what could be a wild and loaded winter pattern through February. No question, the system now spreading rain and snow across California, will push out into the Atlantic somewhere between Charleston, SC and NYC, most likely over the southern Delmarva. Once the system crosses the Rockies, modelling should begin to get a better handle on track.

Exact track will be critical in determining where the heaviest snows will be.
Latest GFS keeps this thing as a huge Mid-Atlantic snow producer with up to a foot expected to reach NYC.

Still just ridiculous totals throughout the Mid-Atlantic, especially between DC and Chesapeake Bay.

This storm should explode off the Delmarva as there is a world of abnormally warm water up the East Coast which could bring real feedback, tightening and drop in central pressure increasing wind and precip rates.

What’s very interesting in all this is not so much the storm late this week but the overall evolution to what could be a wild next 30+ days as a warm-up does kick in following the exit of this system but another potential snow event is on the table within a week and with strong strat warming and a highly active southern storm track. Further outbreaks of arctic air and storms running up the coast are inevitable.
