Following the extreme mild of November/December, old man winter sure is catching up and gripping Europe in a big way.
About as big of a turnaround as you’ll ever see!

Cold and snow is the big talking point this month from the Black Sea to Highlands of Scotland.
While the UK is probably having a ‘run of the mill’ January cold spell, the continent is shivering and snows sure are piling up over the Alps, Balkans and around the Black Sea Coast.
Just when you thought we couldn’t have a winter this year given the warmth and lack of snow just a few weeks ago.

Easternmost France experienced the coldest morning yet with -29C while Paris experienced it’s first freeze with widespread -1s throughout the Metro and there’s sleet and snow pushing in from the west.

Looks like the cold holds firm through the remainder of this week with potentially the coldest night still to come for the UK.
Low pressure over the Blank Sea will continue to bury surrounding mountains from Ukraine, Bulgaria to Turkey while a strong surface high and arctic air keeps the heart of Europe freezing.

Lows spinning around the outer flanks of the arctic air covering much of Europe will bring prolific snows.
GFS snow over the next 5 days. Note the totals in eastern Europe and further snow expected over the UK as a weak wave drops south over Scotland as high pressure builds in from the north..

Next 3 days will remain cold, especially by night over the UK and near continent but the warmth over Ireland eventually moves in and pushes the arctic air east this weekend and eventually warms up western mainland Europe early next week. It remains cold over eastern Europe.

Will add to this write-up late afternoon as I’m heading for Inverness.
Regrettably I’ve no time to add to the above as I had hoped but just quickly.. This is VERY interesting as we depart January and enter February.

Much more in the video tomorrow AM.
See this morning’s video for the discussion.
