Firstly I want to show you what the models have temperature departure-wise through the rest of the month. Looks like there’s good agreement on a cooler West and warmer East with an active storm track across the country.

Notice the extremes greaten day 6-10…

By no means is it written in stone but this weeks wild weather may well be a mere taster of something much wilder next week.

In yesterday’s post I showed you a hint at what the GFS had for next week and I thought Id show you in more detail what the ECMWF is showing today.

Another Pacific storm looks to dive out of the Gulf of Alaska across the Pacific Northwest and into the central or southern Rockies. Now with cold now building up in Arctic Canada and Alaska and you’ve got a northward pushing positive over the eastern continent that’s seen by models to hook over top, one must watch for that arctic cold coming down.

That’s exactly what the models see next week. All it takes it a storm system to tap the southward swelling cold pool.

A greater baroclinic zone, one must worry about a greater severe weather outbreak. More widespread flooding rains may be an issue while unusual warmth makes it all the way to Michigan and New England.

Check out the video for the details but here’s a glimpse at the ECMWF through next week.

Here comes the arctic air in the wake of the deepening low which is likely to bring a second spell of gales to the Great Lakes in barely a week.

In the wake of the widespread and heavy snow across the Rockies, we could see the first -20s, even -30s late next week.

A lot of rain to come east of the Rockies over the next 10 days and especially the Cascades east of the I-5 corridor in the PNW.
