First Heat And Now Flooding, Huge Hail Hammers Parts Of Europe, Tranquil UK For Now!

While heat has been the main story throughout this summer across Europe, it’s storms that’s now taking centre stage.

The upper air pattern is one similar to the last two July’s and opposite the past June-August period with strongest heights extending from the Atlantic across the UK into Scandinavia.

Here’s the current upper setup.

Lower heights and therefore wet and stormy conditions across Iberia and across the Mediterranean while we sit beneath a 1032 high. Note the big trough over Russia, this is driving much fresher air into Germany, Poland and Ukraine where it’s been a hot, dry summer.

With cool air over top of warm air and a balmy Med Sea, the atmosphere reacts and it did in extreme fashion over Naples Italy yesterday.

The below graphic of a monster storm looks more suited to Oklahoma or Kansas and not southern Europe but the perfect ingredients all came together for the development of a large supercell.

Huge hail up to baseball size hit the waters off Italy. Looked like boulders hitting the water.

Lower pressure over Iberia and low level warmth and humidity triggered big storms over southern and eastern Spain too yesterday.

Devastating flooding hit the Almeria region of Spain yesterday!

Through the rest of this work week, the high continues to expand and move into Scandinavia. Storminess remains over Italy.

With the high to the east and low pressure approaching Ireland, we pick up a warmer, more humid southerly which means a rise in temperature for most.

Eventually the low and Atlantic wins out once again and it looks like a rather wet, windy weekend for much of the UK and Ireland while conditions look perfect over Scandinavia and they settle underneath across Italy and the Med..
