The parade of Pacific systems pushing east over the next 7-10 days with Southwest trough deepening to anomalous levels for May means big contrasts across the country, especially late week as heavy snow breaks out over the Rockies while the East is suddenly thrown into July!

The GFS ensemble 5-day mean 500mb height anomalies show the SW trough/NE ridge and that’s despite a positive up over Alaska. Blame or thank the deep trough over the SW for no trough digging into the East.

While the positive holds over the Northeast in the day 5-10 and even 10-15 (according to GFS ens), the Alaska positive slides east and weakening Southwest trough, we may begin to see the break down of the summer-like ridge over the Northeast and possibly the return of weak troughiness making a comeback towards day 10.

The GFS ensemble day 10-15 is hinting at this. Keep in mind that we could have a recurving typhoon in the West Pacific that bears watching.
