Well I’ve showed you plenty of snow total maps and it’s now a case of sit back and let’s see what this storm is made of. Will it be a record breaker?

Here’s what it’s up against in NYC. 18-22 inches I think is a good bet for Central Park but let’s not get too carried away. NYC is familiar with big, crippling snowstorms and there’s been plenty even in the last 10 years including the so called all-time record 26.9 inches which fell in Feb 2006. This however was small fry compared to the great blizzard of 1888.

Boston set their all-time record for snow in recent times too with 27 inches back in the Blizzard of 2003. As for extreme cold, it, like snow is not unusual and we must tread carefully when talking about record cold and ‘worst ever’ because there are records which won’t be broken.

In saying that, you have to go back quite a bit to see the last time NYC (Central Park) fell below zero F. 1994 to be exact. It came close in January 2004 when the thermometer it hit 1F twice.

The models suggested about 5 days ago that some very cold air would visit the Major Northeast Cities this week, immediately after the now snowstorm/blizzard. They’ve backed off quite a bit but there’s more snow on the way for the second half of this week and this will add to the snow the current storm puts down.

ECMWF projected snow cover by this weekend following the storm now and clipper which follows late week.

This may set the stage for a truly frigid open to February. Sure it’s still cold in the coming days but not extreme. Models do take numbers into the tank early and mid next week.

Check out the ECMWF 2-metre temps over the Northeast next Monday and Tuesday.

CFSv2 has a very cold 4 week period with it going wild with the cold week 3 and 4.
