Based on the brutal past 2 weeks and projected cold next week too, this month could challenge the benchmark cold November of 1976. I must add that this is something Weatherbell Analytics have been alluding to.

Some noteworthy aspects to the cold in Chicago!

Upper level cold above Chicago was near record levels too.

Incredibly, tomorrow (Friday) will see the Twin Cities achieve the most consecutive sub-freezing days during November since 1880.

The 24 in Jacksonville, FL broke the daily record low by 6 degrees and was the 2nd coldest Nov reading.
While the cold may ease in the next few days, rest assured yet another lobe of fresh arctic air drives into the central part of the country next week. Not before warmth lifts north as we get a fairly potent storm system winding up.
The Gulf opens up and as low pressure forms along a TX to Great Lakes boundary, don’t be surprised to see flooding rainfall, severe weather and even a blizzard Monday through Wednesday.

Now just when you may have thought this cold eases after next week’s 3rd polar plunge… the below chart is sure to send shivers down the spine!
The 50mb ECMWF ensemble projects a full scale cross polar stratospheric warming event that would trigger an SSW and a significant likelihood of severe cold into the US in December.
