Latest US Outlook: Wild But Classic April Temperature Swing And Variability

Written by on April 11, 2014 in United States of America with 0 Comments

We have quite the upcoming 7 days of weather with the first real burst of spring for the East Coast while a dagger of cold drives down the Plains and eventually spreads east, killing the hopes and dreams that winter was done.

Well, I say winter, what I really mean is, that chilly weather was done for another year.

A frost and freeze is a very real threat all the way to Texas and Arkansas late weekend into Monday morning following these warm 80, 90-degree days.

The pattern as stated in today’s video is very up and down. Warm now, cold next week then as the cold comes in, the warm returns to California and that will spread east. Thankfully, warmth is outdoing cold now but don’t underestimate the chill coming next week. As short lived as it may be, I would hold off on planting anything tender, susceptible to frost nip etc.

CFSv2 shows the ups and downs of the next few weeks nicely.

Slowly but surely, we’re climbing out of this.

Here’s the latest ECMWF snow through the next 7 days. BIG change coming to the very areas that were WARM (Plains) yesterday!

Personally, I would ignore of Northeast snow it’s suggesting. Nonsense! but the Rockies and N Plains, I can see that…

Funnily enough the GFS doesn’t show what I think is believable and has the more unlikely scenario.

Denver and many other areas will go from 70s, even 80s to just 30s with snow by late weekend.

How about that cold shot next week? Here’s the 850mb temps off the ECMWF.

Note the strong SW flow up the Eastern Coastal Plain in response to the deep Plains trough. Should propel temps into the 70s all the way to Boston, maybe near 80 up as far as NYC while Oklahoma is stuck in the 40s and 50s.

Check out these temperatures Monday PM off the ECMWF. 80s, 90s, even 100s over the Desert Southwest, 70s, 80s over the Middle Atlantic and Northeast while Oklahoma is stuck in the 40s, Texas 50s, likely following a morning frost.

Heck of a lot of rain coming to the Gulf Coast, TN/OH Valleys. This will cause flooding issues!

Be sure to watch today’s video for details on this pattern.

Finally, was pretty amazed to see that the GL still had 53.3% ice coverage still. That’s 1000% of normal btw!
