Dangerous, Icy Southern Storm To Give Way To Major Calif Winter Storm, Bitterly Cold!

Written by on December 6, 2013 in United States of America with 0 Comments

We have a complex and dangerous weather situation currently over the Southern Plains as a low pressure system rolling along the southern periphery of the cold dome brings snow, sleet, freezing rain and significant icing issues to Texas up into Oklahoma ENE into Arkansas. Already we’ve seen some nasty conditions out there as ice lies thick on many North Texas, southern Oklahoma roads and sidewalks.

Here’s a look at the current radar via TWC and you can see the swath of snow on the north side, rain to the south while there’s a volatile stripe of icing in between and that’s where the major concern is for travel, power outages etc.

That system will continue to bring a mix of precip along with the very real threat of power loss over the next 36 hours before that system lifts northeast, once it does, the arctic air creeps further south with lows potentially approaching 0 in OKC, mid-teens in Dallas following a Friday highs near 20 and 28 respectively.

Of course there’s a world of cold air over the Rockies and Plains, here was a rather icy view from earlier in Denver, via chopper 4.

As we watch the southern system cause it’s share of problems, another MAJOR storm system pushes in off the Pacific this weekend and it, will present both cold and major snow across a large swath of California and the Southwest.

Here’s the latest warnings out from the NWS.
