The biting easterly flow, although less blustery compared to recent days, is still keeping things abnormally cold. Notice how dry the air feels? That’s courtesy of an air flow blowing cold, dry and continental air all the way from Russia. Even the slightest breeze makes it feel bitter out there. Snow showers which have been frequent and at times, heavy in the east has been feeding into the west and will continue to do so through tonight. Another cold night to come, especially in the clearer west where lows may sink to -6 or -7C in rural areas, particularly in the NW Highlands. -2 or -3C beneath the clearer skies over Glasgow, -1C for Edinburgh where snow showers continue through the night. If we see clear skies over the snow cover, don’t be surprised to see somewhere bottom out at -8 to -11C. Tomorrow is looking much like today, staying very cold with a light easterly breeze. Snow showers for eastern areas, drier, brighter in the west. Highs like today will reach 4-6C in the sunnier, sheltered west, just 1 or 2C in the cloudier, breezier and snowier east.[s2If current_user_can(access_s2member_level1)]
England
It’s been another bitterly cold day with air flowing all the way from Russia. Although winds are down on recent days, even the slightest breeze would cut right through. For eastern, particularly northeastern areas, snow showers have been frequent and at times heavy today while it’s been drier and for some, brighter. Where brightness has filtered through, temps may have risen to a pleasant 4 or 5C but where cloudy, breezy and with snow flakes flying, it’s been another struggle to even reach positive figures.
Tonight will be a repeat of last night with plenty of cloud but there will be breaks, especially in western areas. Snow showers will continue to feed in from the North Sea, especially in the northeast where a fresh dusting is possible at sea level, perhaps 1-2 inches over the North York Moors and Pennines.
Lows tonight will be at or below freezing for all. Coldest where clearest and where clear and there’s snow, it may hit -7 or -8C.
Tomorrow will be very similar to today, most snow showers will be confined to the northeast. Driest and brightest in the west. Highs of 5-6C in the sunnier west, 0 to 2C for the cloudier, breezier east.
Wales
The stuck pattern looks to persist throughout the remainder of this week with a mix of sun and cloud with an odd flurry here and there, heaviest with a chance of further accumulations over higher ground. Highs today only managing 0 to 2C in the breezier, snowier east but in the sheltered west where sunny, it may manage to warm to 6 or 7C.
Under clear skies and lighter winds, temps dip widely to between -2 and -4C but over the snow fields and it may touch -7 or -8C tonight.
Tomorrow will be a near repeat of today with a mix of sun and cloud with snow showers blowing in from the east. Highs only 0 to 2C where cloudier, breezier and snowy, perhaps 5-7C in the sunnier, sheltered west.
Northern Ireland
The cold continues to bite Ulster with a fresh ENE wind feeding snow showers into east and southeastern parts today. These should die out tonight and with clearer skies and relatively light winds, temperatures widely dip to between -2 and -4C, even where snow isn’t present but where snow lies, expect lows potentially to reach -6 or -7C tonight.
A repeat performance tomorrow with a fairly bright day with highs struggling to a mere 3-5C but even the slightest breeze and it feels more like -2 to -4C with a chance of further snow showers feeding in off the Channel.
Ireland
It’s been a cold late March day with maionly cloudy skies with a light to fresh ENE breeze, making the 3-6C air feel that bit nippier. Into tonight and despite cloudcover, temps will dip back below freezing so watch out for icy patches on your drive into work in the morning. If breaks appear in the cloudcover, lows may make it down to -4 or -5C.
Like today, tomorrow’s a mainly cloudy but dry affair with highs once again very low for the time of year at 3-5C, feeling cool with the ENE breeze. Look out for some sleet or snow showers in eastern parts.
