Scotland

It’s been a rough day right across the country but the worst has been by far across Dumfries and Galloway with the combination of heavy snow and strong, gale-force winds causing many roads to close or become blocked. Snow showers have swept across the country today but thankfully many low lying areas which woke to a covering this morning, will end the day bare. Watch out for ice as temperatures drop off after dark. Snow will continue falling across the Southwest tonight and along with strong SE winds, expect conditions to remain poor throughout the night into early Saturday, the rest of the country should remain quieter but winds stay strong. Lows tonight dip to around freezing for all but wind chills will be -5 to -10C widely, -20 or lower over higher, exposed areas.

Saturday is looking quieter with less snow, though winds remain strong. Highs, like today will struggle to 1 or 2C at low levels, 0 to -3C over higher ground. Winds remaining bitter!

Sunday should be much the same, less snowfall, except for showers in the east. Remaining 3-6C below normal, winds remain fresh to strong.

England

It’s a snowy night from Cumbria down through Manchester potentially as far south as Birmingham with some snow showers perhaps reaching Greater London. Watch out on trans-Pennine routes as the combination of heavy snow and gales will make for treacherous driving with a risk of being stuck or stranded. Don’t travel unless you have to!

Moderate to heavy rain continues across the southwest and south of the country with lows dipping to 2 or 3C, feeling sub-zero with the wind. A horrid night to be out and about. So, snow or snow showers will affect much of northern and central England, lows of 0 to -2C, with strong to gale-force SE winds it will feel closer to -10 or lower in the strongest gusts.

Saturday will see the area of snow sink south through the Midlands and dissipate as it does so. Some snow may reach London but I don’t see much in the way of accumulation. Highs remain more like January at 0 to 2C from Carlisle to Birmingham, 3 or 4C in London but a milder 8-10C in the southwest.

Sunday will see a somewhat quieter day with just snow showers blowing in off the North Sea. System snow will have cleared south. Winds will remain fresh to strong with highs of 1-4C.

Lows tonight dip to freezing or slightly below

Wales

A real nasty day right across Wales with heavy rain and gales across western and southern areas while heavy, disruptive snow has caused problems in the north and east. Through tonight those winds remain strong to gale-force and the snow will continue to pile up. Heavy rains will become showery in southern areas while snows continue in the north and east. Lows range from 0C in the snowy north to 3 or 4C in the rainy south.

Tomorrow is another snowy day in the north, perhaps a little less severe than today but highs remain bitter at 0C in the northeast, a slightly milder 4 or 5C in the southwest.

Sunday sees more snow showers, staying cold.

Northern Ireland

Heavy snow and strong winds have caused significant problems across particularly eastern parts of Ulster and tonight it’s no difference. Avoid travel if you can as a further 2-4 inches are possible, especially over higher ground through tonight into tomorrow. Lows tonight 0-3C, factor in SE gales and it MUCH colder.

Into tomorrow and snows continue for southeast and eastern counties, drier further west and north. Highs tomorrow really struggle to 1-3C, colder in the wind.

Sunday will see an ease in the snowfall but it stays very cold well into next week.

Ireland

After a dreadful past 24 hours of heavy, flooding rains and stong to gale-force winds, this weekend is looking drier and brighter but colder. Showers will continue with some turning wintry as temperatures drop, lows 1-4C.

Tomorrow is looking drier but colder with highs of 3-6C, colder in the wind and by Sunday it should be dry but highs of only 2-5C.
