Anywhere Across The UK Could See Snow, Negative Indexes Keep Cold Through Mid-March (Video!)

Written by on March 10, 2013 in United Kingdom & Ireland with 0 Comments

The coldest air we’ve seen all winter is now entering UK airspace and even here in Lennoxtown, north Glasgow the snow showers are blowing in so no matter where you are in the UK through today, you may see some snow flakes flying, even in western areas. The air blowing across the north sea is so cold and despite the seasonal cooling of the North Sea which tends to create a so conducive moisture source than early in the season, will be responsible for producing snow showers. It’s because the wind has never been as cold as what we’re going to see over the next 36 hours.

As for the more disruptive stuff through today, watch out over the Pennines, these hills force air to rise, further cool and condense and so the Pennines will allow additional moisture to be squeezed out, so don’t be surprised to see heavy snow and a further several inches. Elsewhere in the east, snow showers will be off and on, some heavy and some will allow coastings to perhaps a couple of inches.

A lot of questions remain over the potential snow event across the South. A lot depends on the merging of cold air from the north and moisture advancing north into the cold air over the South. The GFS continues to suggest Southwest England will see a decent few inches with Exmoor getting 3-6 inches.

Below is the GFS snow projection off the GFS out at 36 hours. Note the highest amounts over Exmoor.

Here’s the 850 mb temps i’ve been showing you a lot recently. Impressive to see -10C at 5,000ft covering the entire UK and pretty Ireland during Monday

If you live in Denmark which a few subscribers do, then you’ll certainly be feeling the cold with highs today hitting no better than -1 to -4C if your lucky. It’s amazing to see the -15C line at 5,000ft over you.

With skies clearing tonight across the UK and Ireland, 2-metre temperatures dip widely to between -2 and -4C even in towns and cities, despite wind. Get a sheltered spot with less wind and you could see -10C tonight.

Here’s how cold the GFS thinks by Monday morning!

Here’s the AO, told you it was in the tank… Until this lifts, the cold weather will hang around despite the time of year.

The models show a system trying to push in milder air mid to late next week, however.. supported by the indexes, the models show the cold fighting back yet again and likely winning the late season war between winter and spring.

Cold flow continues into mid next week, then a system comes in off the Atlantic. After this system pushes in, more arctic air comes right back in.
