It really hasn’t been much of a winter this year across Chicago although, while snow has been sparse, it is colder than last winter at least. This morning marked the 2nd subzero low of the season at O’Hare International Airport and according to WGN-TV Chief Meteorologist Tom Skilling, the low of 0 and wind chill near -20, makes this the coldest February open in 17 years. Wind chills have been stayed below 0 since 8am yesterday and will likely continue through tonight into tomorrow morning. Today’s high will only muster a chilly 13-degrees before falling back towards 2 or 3 tonight.
The month of January was in fact the least snowy in 12 years with a pathetic monthly total of just 2.6 inches, less than 25% of normal according to WGN-TV.

A series of clippers will ride the northwest flow over the next 3-5 days and this looks to finally bring Chicago some plowable snow. Between now and Tuesday as much as a half foot of snow may come down. 3.5 inches is the seasonal total to date, the average is 20.4 inches. Had there been just a few inches of snowcover when this cold hit, the low may have been considerably lower. Nonetheless, the two mornings which dipped to -1 and 0 to make up this winter’s coldest, came without snow and by that end, the cold is relatively impressive.
