While many of you living particularly in the Northeast have been asking, where’s winter? Your about to get it.
The next 5 days promises not only the coldest weather in a few years from the Upper Midwest to Mid-Atlantic but snow will also be thrown in for good measure. More arctic shots will follow this week’s cold after a brief warmup.
The reason for the big turnaround from a western ridge and eastern trough is the re-establishment of a trough east of Hawaii which brings a ridge back into the western half of North America. This pumps warmth up into the NW of the continent and drives the coldest air southeast into a deepening eastern trough. This sends not only the coldest air of winter into the Midwest and East but the coldest in a few years.
Significant cold highs will come to the Upper Midwest tomorrow with International Falls, MN unlikely to get above -15 for a high following a low near -25 tonight. This would in fact be the coldest high since a -22-degree high in Feb 1996. A high of -5 in Minneapolis, MN tomorrow would be coldest in 4 years. The low tomorrow night may push -20.
Chicago will have a tough time reaching 12 Monday while tomorrow night will sink to -4, only to reach 9 or 10 degrees at best on Tuesday.
How about the East? Think it’s coldest tomorrow for Boston at 31, New York 32, Philadelphia 34, DC 40, Tuesday is MUCH colder with highs in Boston of only 19, New York 23, Philadelphia 24, DC 25. Lows Tuesday night could get down to between 10-14 degrees with wind chills below zero.
