Record Eastern Warmth To Get Kicked Out Next Week

Written by on January 13, 2013 in North and South America, United States of America with 0 Comments

I’m currently in Savannah, GA and enjoying some remarkable January warmth. How warm? 78-degrees and tomorrow I head to Hilton Head, SC where it should be equally as warm. Very unusual for this level of warmth at this time of year but that’s what happens when you’ve a powerful upper ridge and southwest flow.

Highs should reach 57-61 degrees right up through the Big Cities of the Northeast Sunday if the right conditions set up just right. Even folks in NYC could enjoy a rare 60-degree day.

This incredible January warmth is in stark contrast to single digits and teens covering much of the West and Plains. While we saw heavy snow across much of the Rockies and Plains over the past couple of days, heavy, thundery rains with severe weather broke out along a sharp thermal boundary this afternoon. Temps ahead of the arctic front rose well into the 60s over the Ohio Valley while it sharply dropped behind the front.

While the front creeps east, the warmth will continue out ahead with highs rising into the 70s and 80s again tomorrow over the Southeast, 70s for the Mid-Atlantic, possibly 60s for PHL-NYC corridor.

Here’s the ECMWF upper chart for Sun.

Big changes come Tues-Wed as the ridge gets replaced eventually by a trough. Highs will be sharply cooler even down in the Southeast by Wed-Thurs and it returns to COLD in the Northeast with a good chance of snow.

Check this out for Friday!
