Moscow, Russia plummeted to -14F (-26C) yesterday morning which made for the coldest day of the year with a high only warming to 0F (-18C), the day, the high was a frigid -1F (-18C) following a morning low of -11F (-24C). Christmas Eve into Christmas Day saw the beginning of a well earned warm-up as a system pushed into the capital region. This has brought a winter wonderland to the city for Christmas Day. Today’s high should warm to around 16F..
Today will be the first time in 10 days where the high will surpass 10F (-12C) and by tomorrow, the high should rise to 32F (0C) for the first time since December 11th.

A more westerly or zonal flow will present milder conditions from now through the first week of January and over the next few days, Moscow will be down right balmy as highs push 40F as ridging wins the battle by pumping mild air up from the Mediterannean. The night of the 26, 27th may see nighttime lows struggle to get below freezing so there will be some chipping away of the snowcover, though likely not enough warmth to eradicate it completely. 3 days in the mid to upper 30s will make way for a cooldown near to New Year and beyond that. While a zonal flow with Atlantic air reaching far east Europe, this air gets cools as it progresses inland and so seasonal temperatures can be expected after a 3-day heatwave!
Here was the ECMWF upper chart and 850 temps for last Sunday, note the deep trough and blues representing the coldest 850s over eastern Europe.

Now check this chart out for Boxing Day, notice the trough is gone and it’s replaced by a ridge which is positioned southwest of Moscow. The strong positive heights and southwest winds will push highs to near 40F in coming days and then the flow flattens out and becomes more west-east and although maritime air will keep Moscow much milder, it won’t be particularly warm with highs returning to the mid low to mid-20s. The start to 2013 will be more seasonal for the city.

Did you mistake Glasgow for Moscow this year in your forecast? Seems very much like it.
My weather station continues to report normal December conditions for Eastern Scotland for this time of year despite your predictions of severe arctic cold.
