Scotland

With high pressure building to the west, low pressure to the east, a cold northerly flow is drawing arctic air doiwn over Scotland and the UK and this will set the scene for the remainder of this week with the focus being, cold.

After a blustery, cold and showery day across the north and northeast and a bright, sunny day with lighter winds across the Central Lowlands and South, conditions settle into tonight. With clear skies, lighter winds and a cold air mass in place, temperatures for many urban areas will see the coldest night so far.

Thanks to the presence of high pressure, tomorrow will be a fine, dry and bright day but feeling colder thanks to even colder air pushing down on the northerly flow aloft. The strong overnight cooling also makes it harder for the weak sunshine to recover daytime temperatures. Following lows tonight of between -1 to -4C widely with local -4 to -6C, the high is likely to struggle much beyond 5C., may remain at freezing till near lunchtime and only rising to 2C for sheltered areas.

England

It’s been an improving day across the bulk of England following a dreadful past few where flooding has caused widespread misery, even devastation. Tonight should be largely dry with just some showers running down the eastern side of the country, with a stiff north wind, it will feel cold. Despite cloudcover for many, temperatures will be low, reflective of the arctic air now filtering south.

Through tomorrow and the showers appear to return to northeastern parts from Northumberland extending south towards South Yorkshire.. These may be heavy and prolonged, so worth paying attention. Elsewhere it’s a largely dry day but always feeling cold in the wind. Highs range from 4-8C.

Tomorrow night looks to be more conducive for a cold night with widespread clear skies. Lows – to -4C.

Wales

Like in England, today was a much better day following this week’s big rains which even extended into the first part of last night. A drier north wind means, little rain except for an odd shower, and colder with highs of only 7-9C.

Tonight will be partly cloudy, dry with a northerly breeze. Temps dip to low single figires so frost or ice is possible.

Tomorrow will be a fairly bright day with sunny intervals, just an odd shower and a lighter northerly breeze. Slightly cooler than today at 5-7C.

Tomorrow night will be clear, calm and cold with lows widely below freezing.

Northern Ireland

Today, tomorrow and Thursday is largely the same throughout Ulster with a dominant northerly breeze which takes the edge off an already chilly daytime temp of 5-7C. A mix of sun and clouds, few showers dotted around and nights see mostly clear skies, light winds and lows of 1C in towns, -1 to -3C in rural parts.

Ireland

The much improved, fine, dry and settled pattern can come at a price and it certainly is with the cold. Days of fine, dry and bright with just an odd coastal shower but despite the sunshine, temps are struggling to get much past 6C. Factor in the north wind and it feels colder. Nights beneath clear skies and fairly light winds means a widespread frost with lows dipping to between 0 and -3C.

Tonight, tomorrow and Thursday will all be much the same, including temperatures, although late week could see even colder air.
