Summer Has Finally Arrived To Great Britain But Ireland Awaits Beneath A Blanket Of Cloud
After seemingly weeks of cold, rain and wind, the much anticipated flip in our long term weather pattern across northwest Europe has occured as we see the stubborn trough slide southeastwards. As it does so, we see very warm, continental air slide all the way from Russia due westwards across Germany and into the low countries where temps were widely 27-30C this afternoon.
While this warm air slides west UK-bound, so a strong upper level ridge of high pressure just west of Portugal intensifies and expands north, northeastwards. Between this warm air injected into a strengthening upper level high, very warm air is a given and has been today across the UK. This warming and return to sunnier weather is a sign of more to come.
The image below was captured by nasa’s rapid response satallite this afternoon and one can see the near wall to wall sunshine covering most of Wales, England (except the extreme SW) and a good part of Scotland, though it was a good deal cloudier over western Scotland. This strong sun, beating down along with sinking air allowed most to climb into the low to mid-20s C.
The next 5 days appears to be a repeat of what we’ve seen today as the high continues to build up from the Azores and this will support abundant sunshine and warmth with a widespread 23-28C across the central and southern UK with perhaps a 29C showing up between Wednesday and Friday. No, Scotland won’t be left out with just an odd warm day, the warmth is here and may stay longers overall. From now through Sunday we should see warming to between 22-25C widely. If the ECMWF is correct, the warmest of all appears to be by late this weekend over Scotland where we may see a 28C perhaps over the central or north Highlands.
