Impressive May Cold Settles Over UK With Surprise Snows And Lows Dipping Into Unusual Territory

Temps may dip to -7C (19F) over Southern Uplands/North Of England Tonight, May Record Is Safe!

With a cold pool of stable, arctic origin air overhead we are seeing chilly days with highs only reaching 6-10C, factor in a northerloy breeze and it feels even colder. By night, as soon as the sun drops below the horizon, even though it’s as late as 9.30pm, the temp drops and through the short hours of darkness we’re seeing some impressive lows.

So, how impressive is this late season cold blast? By day it may not seem all that big of a deal with highs, though cool, may not appear majorly cold, however it’s at night where I feel the realisation is there that for May, it’s darn cold. My truck dashboard temp this morning as I drove through Lesmahagow hit -5C and as I drove up and into the frosty hollows tucked within the Southern Uplands of Scotland, my truck read -6C. What interesting about this is that during ALL of the past winter, not only was the lowest a mere -7C but this morning’s -6 was the second only to the -7 for what was the lowest reading. Yes, it’s taken till a morning in MAY for the 2nd lowest truck dashboard reading.

Tonight will be equally as cold I believe over parts of the Southern Uplands and North of England with a -7C. Tomorrow will be another suna nd cloud mix but temps should be a little milder, especially over Scotland with 11 perhaps 12C. 6-10C will keep England and Wales very chilly with further snow showers possible.

Sun night into Monday morning will be another frosty night for those areas that see clear skies but this will be the last of the chill as a new Atlantic system sweeps into the UK bringing wind and rain.
