Sunday’s bitter cold weather didn’t stop Larry Sullivan from going for his morning run near the river valley in Edmonton on Dec. 13, 2009.

The astonishing 51 below zero/-46.1C reading recorded yesterday morning (Sunday) at Edmonton International Airport, Alberta, Canada, interestingly was not only a near all-time record for that city or the second coldest spot on the planet yesterday, second only to Dzalinda, Siberia but yesterday was also a reading that peaked a “series of record lows over the past 12 months”. Remember back in March 2009 that same site recorded another remarkable low of -41.5C ironically also obliterating the old record by some 12 degrees, the old record for March was -29.4C… This time around it was also by an unusually large margin as the old record for Dec 13 was only -36.1C, making the -46.1C are massive difference.

-73F/-58.4C Wind Chill is hard to comprehend
It is remarkable to think that with that brutal -46C air a wind was blowing which created a reelfeel of -58C or -73F, ouch! This is remarkable stuff and I am amazed even with predictions well out that we could see impressive cold hit the Western Interior of Canada, even I am surprised at just HOW COLD they have gotten.
IS THIS SOMETHING THAT SHOULD RAISE ALARM BELLS FOR NEIGHBOURS TO THE SOUTH?
With this magnitude and severity of cold available not too far north of the barbed wire fence which seperates a temperate climate to the wrath of the Arctic, one must ask whether a severe Arctic outbreak is looming for the Lower 48, oh, say from the Northern Plains down to Florida either at the closing days of December or early January! With the low angled sun, abundant and increasing snowcover and a likely western ridge building across the Western US and Canada over the next 5-10 days, that truely ferocious air must go somewhere and I’m affraid to say if you don’t like cold, your not going to like the next 4-8 weeks which could be the worst 4-8 week period from the Lakes to Southeast coast in a decade. That cold bottled and bruatalising the West of Canada is going nowhere other than the US, only question is, how cold will we see?
This drum has been beating since summer and the October outbreak set the ball rolling, the warmth of November allowed the batteries to charge and now we’re seeing what we’re dealing with now in Edmonton… Those of you living in the entire Eastern US, some 150-200 million of you should be paying close attention to Edmonton, cause what their getting now, your getting soon, sure you may not get 51 below zero and a 73 below wind chill, but you are going to see some of your coldest air since the turn of the millenium…
“GREAT BRITAIN WARMING TONIGHT BUT WE, LIKE AMERICANS WATCHING EDMONTON, SHOULD BE WATCHING EUROPE, CAUSE THAT IS WHAT WE’RE GOING TO GET!!”
Thanks for reading.
