Following a very cold open to new year over the Canadian Maritimes, a brief surge of warmth flooded eastern North America and yesterday turned out to be the warmest January day on record for New Brunswick.

This morning saw Oymyakon, eastern Siberia hit -59.6C (-75.3C), the coldest of the Northern Hemisphere winter outside of Greenland so far and also the coldest for this location in 7 years.
