Wind chill warnings were in effect across much of Eastern and Central Canada Monday morning, with near record-breaking temperatures in a number of cities.City Temperature & Wind chill this morning

Warnings were issued for the entire province of New Brunswick, where a cold air mass and brisk northwest winds forced temperatures down to between –35 and –38 overnight and into Monday morning, according to the Environment Canada weather office.

Temperatures were expected to plummet in southeast and southwest Quebec to between –25 C and –40 C. As of 7 a.m., it was –28 C in Quebec City, or –42 with the wind chill.

In Ottawa it was –30 C, but felt like –38 with the wind chill, the weather office said. In Toronto, it was –20 C with a wind chill of –26.

Temperatures are expected to remain frigid in many areas until Tuesday morning.

The same Arctic blast affecting Canada was blamed for two deaths in the northeastern United States, where temperatures dropped to –34 C overnight.

In Lansford, Penn., a 49-year-old man died after spending Friday night in his car. A woman in North Haven, Conn., died after she apparently fell in a driveway Saturday night and froze to death. “This is the coldest air we’ve had in about two years,” said Michael Hill, a weather service meteorologist in Caribou, Maine.

WEATHER TALK
By Mark Vogan

A Very Cold Day follows a Very Cold Night which saw temps dip to -20 in Pennsylvania, -37 in New York, -35 in Vermont

After a night of clear skies, Arctic high pressure sliding across a Northeast-wide snowfield, temps where allowed to fall away to bitter levels overnight. Indeed, under sunny skies, little warming has been found today with most places feeling closer to zero degrees. The reflective nature of the snowpack and across such a broad area is helping keep the the lowest levels of the atmosphere cold. Many interior valleys of New England will remain below zero as well as cities such as Ottawa, Montreal and Quebec City after lows dropped to between -18 and -22F (-28 and -30C) with wind chills near or below -40C/F

TODAY’S CONDITIONS (LOCALLY)

After a clear spell late last evening which dropped temps below freezing for an 18th night this month, this beats the amount of nights below freezing last January by one, it’s possible another couple may be added before February arrives! In saying that, skies clouded over and temps rebounded to between 33 and 34 during the overnight helping lift the frosting which had formed once again on cars etc. The daytime weather was pleasantly mild with a light breeze and very it was cloudy and very Atlantic-influenced.

Thanks for reading.

    >Nice round-up of the predicted frigid climate Mark – and there's even colder air to come according to my calculations. Many records will be broken in February. La Nina's power is just getting going in the northern hemisphere…
