Although located well to the north of the British mainland, Shetland is more known for it’s frequent winter gales rather than bitter cold, however this wild and picturesque group of islands has been stuck under an arctic air mass for much of January and on the morning of January 27, the far north community of Baltasound saw the thermometer drop to -8.3C. This marked the site and archipelago’s lowest temperature since the same reading was recorded back in March 2013.
Here’s a picture of snow covered Baltasound back on January 11.

For a reading colder than that of 2021 and 2013, you would have to go back to February 2010 when -9C was recorded. According to Maximiliano Herrera, the coldest ever temperature recorded in Shetland was -11.9C set back in February 2001.
