Fire & Water grip Europe in a summer of extremes

Fire and water grab headlines across Europe and world as the summer of 2017 continues to bring extremes.

What started as a shower Monday night turned into a monsoon-like deluge early Tuesday as thunderstorms dropped a month’s worth of rain on Istanbul within just a couple of hours. The impacts were felt throughout the city as streets turned to rivers.

Receiving rainfall info on the event appears difficult but some sources say over 100mm or 4 inches of rain fell within 3 hours.

The system which crossed Istanbul produced nearly 7,000 lightning strikes within just 2 hours.

A couple of days previous, this was the scene in southern Sicily after the same system which brought the deluge to Istanbul brought 4 inches of rain in one hour.

Meanwhile hot, dry and windy conditions stretching from France to Italy across the Adriatic to Bosnia and Croatia are fuelling devastating wildfires.

This was the scene before daybreak this morning in the suburbs of Split, Croatia.
