Strong early April sun and low pressure often leads to convective showers and thunderstorms, especially over a warming Mediterranean.

We witnessed sun and convective showers over parts of the UK during Saturday but the bulk of the lightning activity was focused over northeast Iberia, southern France extending across the Balearics to Tunisia where low pressure and cooler air aloft and warmer air beneath enhanced instability.

Another focus was Germany and southern Turkey and eastern Med.

Given the concentration of lightning over SW France yesterday, it’s no surprise we saw scenes like this one near Toulouse.

Cyclonic rotation triggered within the low over the Balearics yesterdat created spin in the stormy skies above northern Menorca. This was Ciutadella.
