Ok, so we continue to endure that nagging easterly wind with hefty, gusty showers piling in off the North Sea. By late week and through the weekend, a low sliding underneath the Scandinavia block in over Iberia will spread it’s cloud and rain northwards over the UK and so we can expect a more rainy period rather than showery.

The complication comes as we head into next week. Matthew is expected to be entering the cooler North Atlantic but injecting warmth in the mid-latitude atmosphere. This looks to split or shove east the Scandinavia high allowing Atlantic lows to return to the UK weather charts. It’s as we progress through next week, modelling suggests a cold polar-maritime flow out of the NNW develops with high pressure positioned near Iceland and another over Russia.

In the 6-10 day, that high builds in over Ireland and the UK resettling the pattern again.

The 5-day mean gfs ensemble continues to hold a northerly blocking high through the next 15 days!

Plenty of chill for central and eastern Europe while the west warms with the return of the Atlantic!

This is certainly a ‘taste of early winter’ across eastern Europe with snow and temps running 3-6C below normal.

Note how temps hold steady or drop over Russia and Ukraine but rise from Poland westwards.
