We have a stark N-S UK weather and temperature contrast today and through the weekend thanks to low pressure to the north and high pressure to the south.

This morning’s infrared satellite view shows the next system piling rain across Northern Ireland and Scotland but clear and increasingly warm further south.

Today sees the eastward progression of the band of heavy and persistent rain accompanied by windy conditions, especially along the coast and over high ground.

We loose the rain but gain the wind Saturday at Troon.

It’s another hot one across Portugal, Spain and France within the sunshine and ahead of the main front.

Big contrast as of 7am over the peninsula.

Once this latest system moves through the UK it’s sun and blustery showers for NI and Scotland but further south the front never quite reaches London and therefore it stays warm and humid. In fact, while temperatures decrease across northern parts, they increase across the south as ridging builds over Iberia and serious heat is transferred north across the Straits of Gibraltar.

The weekend low gives way to high pressure which settles things down into early next week with temperatures on the rise. Sunday through Tuesday sees a major heat surge which will be the strongest of the year. The northern edge of this heat will make it into southern Britain but low pressure looks to spoil the show by mid next week.

Sunday, Monday will see low to mid 40s in southern Spain and by Tuesday we may approach the UK’s warmest to date (27.8C) while 40C is possible in southern France and 46C in southern Spain.

The heat breaks as the next low spoils the show mid next week.
