After a cold and for some, snowy weekend, milder Atlantic air makes a return for Ireland and the UK into the new working week. As a result of milder Atlantic air sweeping in from the west, the core of cold gets pushed into the near continent.
Tonight starts cold across Northern Ireland and Scotland under clear sky and light wind. Frost is quickly forming following this evening’s sunset. 0 to -5C, locally -7 or 8C over the snow fields of the east Grampians.

The southward shift in high pressure over the Atlantic will drive the milder but more normal flow into the UK and an increase in wind, cloud and eventually rain brings warmer air back into Scotland during the early hours tomorrow while the near continent likely experiences the coldest of the season. The first sub-freezing low is likely for Paris tonight following a high of 7C earlier.

Tuesday AM will see the coldest night of the season from southern France, Alps and Germany.

While wind, rain and temps more suited to late November control the UK, the cold continues to push deeper into Europe. Towards mid week, a low forms in the Balearic Sea and heads east into the Central Med. This low will tap the arctic air sliding east and south while drawing warm air north from the Sahara. Yesterday saw damaging winds and gusts of 80 mph along the coasts of Sardinia, Sicily, Italy and Greece thanks to a deep low and late this week will see another deep, potentially disruptive system.

The biggest snowfall this week focuses on the Alps and Balkan Mountains. Both Alps and Balkan Mountains could see huge amounts of up to 2-4ft.
The 2m temp anomaly chart shows very nicely the surge of warmth ahead of the central med low and cold sweeping in on the backside.
