After a lull in weather proceedings of late, we’re finally getting into some interesting weather once again. First of all we’re watching the clipper diving through the Lakes into the Northeast tonight and tomorrow and a secondary system which after bringing heavy snow to the 4 Corners, pushes through Texas before riding up the coast as a potential Nor’easter this weekend.

BOTH clipper coming down from Canada and system lifting north from Texas are shown on the models to feedback off the warm Atlantic.
Current US snow cover. Now down to just 25%.

Snow cover is currently well west of the big cities.

Check out the feedback even the GFS is seeing as the clipper reaches the coast tomorrow. This could enhance snowfall and bring surprise 3-5 inch amounts to parts of New Jersey and adjacent areas.

Then there’s system number 2. This looks more significant BUT even the clipper feedback can bring surprise amounts locally.

Notice that both models see the heaviest snow over the Mid-Atlantic.
The frigid end to January/start to February is still on the cards. The above will certainly help lay down the reflective blanket of white.
I think some think if there’s not much snow, it’s not be cold either but certainly in ‘snow drought’ areas, it’s been a colder than normal month!

Many across particularly the Northeast from Philly to Boston may be complaining about a lack of snow or even winter this year but strong east QBO winters tend to see snowier/stormier February’s.

The global SST profile is also favourable for cold and snow over the eastern US.
